Wyndham Championship winner’s payout is $954K of $5.3 million purse

The annual stop in Greensboro is on the smaller side for prize money, but the four players contending late on Sunday aren’t exactly in it for just the check this week.

The Wyndham Championship falls in a tough spot on the schedule as the last regular season event on the PGA Tour. Most of the top players in the world take the week off after the PGA Championship and before the four-event sprint through the FedExCup, which begins next week at the Barclays. But the Greensboro event is one of the most historic stops on the Tour. The venue has changed over the years, but this is the 75th edition of this tournament in the Greensboro area. The purse is on the smaller side for the PGA Tour schedule, but the winner still takes home $954,000 of a total $5.3 million in prize money.

The main contenders coming down the stretch at the Wyndham are Nick Watney, Heath Slocum, Freddie Jacobson and Camilo Villegas. Sedgefield Country Club is a layout that yields birdies, and they’re pouring them in on the back nine as the leaderboard shuffles by the minute. Slocum, Jacobson, and Villegas are currently tied for the lead at 17-under, but Watney, playing in the final pairing, has several more holes to match and potentially pass the leaders.

Watney is probably the most accomplished of the group. The 54-hole leader has receded from his perch as one of the most consistent and top earning American golfers in the world. A win on Sunday would push his career earnings to $23,756,827, so the winner’s check is probably less important to him than getting his first W in almost two years. That last win came a bit unexpectedly at the Barclays, so maybe Watney, who has world-class talent, can catch a hot streak during this year’s FedExCup. While Watney boasts more than $22M in earnings, the other three aren’t exactly paupers either. Villegas has cashed more than $17M, Jacobson almost $20M, and Slocum just over $16M.

Only the Frys.com Open and the John Deere Classic have smaller purses than the Wyndham at $5.3 million. But for Watney and the other players chasing a FedExCup berth, the overall payout is a little less important this week. Slocum was on the bubble of the top 125 FedExCup invitees, while Jacobson and Villegas haven’t won on Tour in a few years. Here are the payout totals for the top 25 finishers (totals will change with ties):
