Rory McIlroy tops final 2014 FedExCup points standings

The top 125 are now set for the PGA Tour’s postseason, with Rory McIlroy leading the way into next week’s Barclays.

With the conclusion of the Wyndham Championship, the PGA Tour’s 2013-14 regular season is now over and the final 125 players for the FedExCup are now set. Nicholas Thompson was the one player to drop out of the top 125 in the points standings in the final week, losing his spot to the newly-entered Sang-Moon Bae and missing 125th position by a single point.

Brad Fritsch and Heath Slocum spent much of Sunday jumping in and out of the top 125, but both couldn’t convert in the final round. Slocum held a share of the lead in Greensboro, but a bogey-bogey finish, including a three-putt at the last, pushed him to the wrong side of the playoff cut line and lost him the guaranteed full Tour card that comes with FedExCup privileges. It was an awful way to finish and drop out for one of the more notable Cinderella stories (Slocum’s late 2009 run) in the short history of the FedExCup. Fritsch started the final round just a shot off the lead and playing in the final pairing, projected to jump some 63 spots and into the top 100. But a final round even-par 70 resulted in a T8 finish and a plummet back outside the top 150.

Rory McIlroy finishes on top of the standings this year, overtaking Jimmy Walker last week with his PGA Championship title. McIlroy, who won back-to-back postseason events in 2012 but not the overall cup, stated that winning the playoffs (and the $10 million grand prize) is his next major goal. Walker nearly went wire-to-wire on top of the standings, winning the debut event of the new wraparound schedule, the Frys.com Open, last October. Three early season wins before the calendar even hit February 10 ensured that Walker would stay on top of the standings for most of the year. But McIlroy’s late run with two majors and a WGC title knocked him out of the No. 1 spot.

Both Walker and McIlroy are guaranteed to make it through all four postseason events. As a refresher, here are the four cuts made at each playoff stop:

  • The Barclays -- Top 125 in FedExCup standings -- Aug. 21-24, Ridgewood CC, New Jersey
  • Deutsche Bank Championship -- Top 100 in FedExCup standings -- Aug 29-Sep 1, TPC Boston, Mass.
  • BMW Championship -- Top 70 in FedExCup standings -- Sep. 4-7, Cherry Hills CC, Colorado
  • The TOUR Championship -- Top 30 in FedExCup standings -- Sep. 11-14, East Lake GC, Georgia

And if you’re morbidly curious, the only multiple FedExCup winner, Tiger Woods, finished with 45 FEC points, good enough for 218th place out of the 262 players listed in the standings.

Here are the final projected standings for the 2014 FedExCup:
