WGC Bridgestone Invitational 2014: Sergio Garcia in the lead, Rory McIlroy chasing

Rory McIlroy held off Sergio Garcia to win the British Open. Now, he’ll attempt to chase down Garcia in the final round of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

Sam Greenwood

Sergio Garcia opened the third round of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational with a three-stroke lead and that’s exactly where he ended the day. Garcia wasn’t able to duplicate the 61 he shot on Friday, but his 3-under round of 67 moved him to 14-under and three strokes clear of the field heading into the final round.

The course was a more difficult test on Saturday than it was in the second round. Garcia handled the conditions well, notching three early birdies to move to 14-under. Garcia shredded the back nine on Friday, recording a birdie on eight of the nine holes. He came nowhere near matching that performance on Saturday, recording a birdie and a bogey to shoot even on the back side. His round was still one of the better rounds of the day, with no player carding better than a 65.

Rory McIlroy moved into second place with a 4-under round of 66. The British Open champion closed his round with back-to-back birdies, moving him to 11-under and alone in second place. McIlroy and Garcia topped the leaderboard during the final round of the British Open and the two will compete for another significant title on Sunday. They are far from the only notable names on the top of the leaderboard. Adam Scott, Keegan Bradley and Justin Rose are tied for fourth place at 8-under while Brandt Snedeker is in seventh place at 6-under.

Tiger Woods struggled to get anything going, finishing his round with just a single birdie. A double bogey and another bogey on the back nine left him with a 2-over round of 72. He’s 1-over for the championship, tied for 36th place. Here is a complete look at the leaderboard through 54 holes.
