2014 Barclays: Tee times, pairings for Sunday’s final round at Ridgewood

Jim Furyk and the American Ryder team could really use a win on Sunday at The Barclays. The 44-year-old will be out again in the final pairing with another 54-hole lead, hoping to hold off a strong leaderboard of chasers.

There are 18 holes left in the opening leg of the 2014 FedEx Cup, and it will be Jim Furyk and Jason anchoring the Sunday tee sheet at Ridgewood. The course yielded fewer mid-60s rounds on Saturday, with the Ridgewood setup particularly difficult and that higher rough continuing to punish the players as soon as they left the fairway. As a result, Day was able to jump up into a share of the lead with a 3-under round of 68, while Furyk matched him a little later at 9-under with a round of 69.

Rory McIlroy posted another round in the red, but at 4-under and five shots off the pace, he’ll need to go super low to keep pace and pass all the world class talent ahead of him. McIlroy put himself in a hole with that 3-over round of 74 to start the week. As expected, a little more practice and return to a normal work week quickly put Rory back in form, but it’s likely his win streak won’t reach four straight on Sunday in New Jersey. If the current leaderboard holds, Rory is projected to fall from first to third in the FedEx Cup standings, but he’s still in the driver’s seat and won’t have to hope for outside help to win his first ever PGA Tour postseason.

A win by either Furyk or Day would put them on the No. 1 spot. Furyk has won the FedEx Cup before, sinking a putt on the last in Atlanta to win the 2010 edition. Outside his 2003 U.S. Open title, it’s the highlight of Furyk’s lengthy Tour career. He’s been arguably the most consistent American player over the past 12 months, but he still hasn’t won a Tour event since that 2010 title. There have been countless chances, at both regular Tour events and the majors, but he’s been unable to close things on Sunday. That blown match to Sergio Garcia at the 2012 Ryder Cup didn’t do much to dispel that recent rep. A victory to end that winless streak, wipe away some of that narrative and boost Furyk heading into this year’s Ryder Cup, where he will be one of the top two American players in form, would be enormous for 44-year-old and American golf.

Furyk will go with Day at 2:05 p.m. ET for a scheduled finish on CBS around 6 p.m. McIlroy plays with Angel Cabrera just after noon, so that final pairing will know before they ever hit a shot if the world’s No. 1 and hottest player has joined the battle and is making a charge.
