WGC-Bridgestone Invitational purse: Players competing for a $9 million purse

The final round of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational is underway at Firestone Country Club and in addition to the accolades of winning one of the best non-majors of the PGA Tour season, the field is also competing for one of the richest purses in golf. The payouts in the WGC events used to be the richest in the sport, but that changed this year with the purses for the major championships increasing. Still, the field will compete for $9 million on Sunday with the winner taking home $1.53 million.

The winning prize isn’t much less than the $1.66 million Rory McIlroy won last month at the British Open. McIlroy could come away with another prize worth more than $1.5 million as he opened the day alone in second place. Sergio Garcia began the round in the lead at 14-under and a victory would net him one of the biggest payouts of his career. Garcia has had plenty of success during his career and a win would bring him close to $60 million in career on-course winnings between the PGA Tour and European Tour.

The winner won’t be the only player walking away with a significant payday. Ties will ultimately play a major role in the exact amount each player earns, but 15 players could take home six-figures. Without ties, the second-place finisher will earn $900,000 while a third-place finish is worth $517,000. The top seven spots are penciled in at $220,000 or more. The format of the Bridgestone Invitational differs from most events with no cut. That means that no matter how they played, every player in the field will make more than $40,000. A total of 74 players remain in the field and a solo last-place finish would be worth $42,000.
