Tiger Woods given extension on PGA Championship registration

Whether Tiger Woods will actually play the PGA Championship is unclear. There’s no question he is going to do everything in his power to try, however.

Tiger Woods has received an extension to register for this weekend’s PGA Championship, according to Golf Channel’s Jason Sobel. The deadline had been set for 5 p.m. ET on Tuesday, but Woods is dealing with extenuating circumstances. Namely, he is waiting to see whether he will be healthy enough to take on Valhalla after withdrawing from last weekend’s WGC-Bridgestone Invitational with back spasms.

Woods now has until the 8:35 a.m. opening round tee time in Louisville on Thursday to register. He is currently rehabbing at his home in Florida. The best parking spot in the Valhalla lot, however, is still reserved for Woods and vacant as we await a final decision.

The news adds perhaps the thickest layer of intrigue yet to the will-he/won’t-he speculation that has occurred since Sunday. In the moments after Woods’ withdrawal, SB Nation’s Brendan Porath wrote that Woods was all but certain to miss the season’s final major championship. However, the extension could be a sign that the golf megastar will be doing everything he can to play.

Whether Woods plays may be moot. He hasn’t been an effective golfer this year, and has been downright bad in recent weeks. At Firestone on Sunday, he struggled to make routine shots on the course. Emily Kay noted a particularly “atrocious” tee shot on the par-3 fifth hole that fell 65 yards short of the pin.

Woods has been given 33/1 odds to win the PGA Championship by Bovada if he participates, though that figure may be inflated due to name recognition. Unsurprisingly, Rory McIlroy was named the favorite with 9/2 odds. The 25-year-old has won two straight PGA Tour events, including the Open Championship late last month.
