‘For f*ck’s sake!’ Tiger Woods hits another wild tee shot into water hazard at Valhalla

We knew it wouldn’t be easy or smooth for Tiger, but it’s getting real ugly for the noted golf enthusiast at the PGA Championship.

Sam Greenwood

Only the most blind Tiger superfans could have expected Woods to contend this week at the PGA Championship. He’s not a particularly competitive golfer right now, and he’s not healthy. Even if Woods had not injured his back on Sunday at Firestonne, where he could barely hobble off the course and change his shoes, his game would not have been sharp enough to be a serious threat to win the season’s final major.

So while it was a boost to have the noted golf enthusiast drop in on Valhalla on Wednesday afternoon to try and give it a go, we knew it probably wasn’t going to be pretty once he teed it up. He hit an array of loose iron shots on his first nine, sailing one right and then airmailing one way left into the crowd at the two par-3s for two bogeys. There was also a chunked iron shot some 30 yards short of the green mixed in there at No. 12.

The real ugliness, however, came when Tiger made the turn onto the front nine at Valhalla. The 2000 PGA winner here stepped up to the tee on No. 1 and bombed his drive 65 yards off the fairway into a hazard. That led to this discouraging graphic reinforcing just how wild Woods’ tee ball went.

Tiger could at least play out of that hazard, which was just a red-lined run-off area. But he’d still make a bogey 5.

On the next tee, however, Tiger would snap another hook left into another hazard. It prompted a trademark Tiger slam of the club into the turf, and an audible self-admonishing “For fuck’s sake, Tiger!”

That one also landed in a red-lined hazard but was submerged a couple feet under water. He’d take his drop and make another bogey 5.

He’s currently 3-over and in a tie for 57th place. The leader is eight shots ahead at 5-under.

We didn’t expect it to be smooth or pretty, but it’s still not fun to watch.
