2014 PGA Championship tee times: Start time and pairings for Saturday’s round

Rory McIlroy holds the lead at Valhalla and will be joined by Jason Day in the final pairing.

Rory McIlroy held off some of the best players in the world during his back-to-back wins at the British Open and WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. If he’s going to keep the lead heading into Sunday at the PGA Championship, he’ll once again have to outlast a strong list of contenders. That list includes Jason Day, who is one stroke behind McIlroy on the leaderboard and will join the No. 1 player in the world in the final pairing on Saturday.

Although McIlroy played his way into the clubhouse lead on Friday, it was Day who turned in the round of the day. The 26-year-old Australian fired a 6-under round of 65 to jump 18 spots up the leaderboard and into a tie for second place. At 8-under, he will begin the final round one stroke behind McIlroy. The two will be the last players off the first tee and form the most notable pairing of the day. Day joins Sergio Garcia and Rickie Fowler among the list of players who attempted to keep up with McIlroy recently. He won’t be the only notable name chasing McIlroy at Valhalla on Saturday, however, with Jim Furyk, Fowler and Phil Mickelson also near the top of the leaderboard.

Furyk is tied with Day for second place at 8-under. He’s played well recently, finishing fourth at the British Open and second at the RBC Canadian Open. He already has five top five finishes this year and a solid third round could put him in line for a sixth and potentially his first win of the year. Furyk will play with Ryan Palmer in the third round. Fowler has a fourth place finish and a pair of second place finishes in the majors this year. He’s once again in the mix heading into the weekend. At 7-under, he will open Saturday two shots off the lead. He’ll tee off in the third-to-last group, playing with Mikko Ilonen. With Fowler, McIlroy and Day, the final three groups will include possibly the three biggest names of the next wave of PGA stars. All three are 26 years old or younger and will once again be in the center stage.

It isn’t all young stars in the late groups. Phil Mickelson hasn’t had a very good season up to this point, but played well during the first two rounds. An eagle on his final hole of the second round moved him to 6-under for the tournament and into a tie for seventh place. Mickelson will tee off at 2:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, playing with Bernd Wiesberger.

TNT and CBS will combine to broadcast eight hours of live coverage on Saturday. CBS will handle the bulk of the afternoon coverage, beginning at 2 p.m. With the final five groups teeing off at 2:20 p.m. or later, viewers should be able to watch nearly every key shot live as it happens. McIlroy and Day figure to take over the spotlight of the coverage when they tee off at 3 p.m.
