Jason Day wades through river, hits barefoot shot, makes routine par

Jason Day pulls off the most adventurous and miraculous par of the PGA Championship.

Warren Little

Jason Day may be the first player to ever hit a shot barefoot and in shorts at a major championship.

At the second hole of the PGA Championship, Day yanked his drive way left off the Valhalla course and into the junk on the other side of a creek. There wasn’t much thought to looking for the ball and playing it, but then David Feherty of CBS went wandering off and wanted to help.

Day is playing with Rory McIlroy in the final group, just a shot back of the leader. You’d think Feherty would want to help out McIlroy, his fellow Ulsterman, but the CBS analyst persisted in the weeds and did end up finding Day’s ball. Even Rory walked over wanting to get a look at what the hell was going on.

Day’s wading caddie would cross over to confirm and identify the ball, which meant the Aussie needed to strip down and ford the river himself for a look.

The ball identified, Day decided he would play it as opposed to taking the penalty stroke and dropping one over on the other side of the hazard. Now he just needed his club, which was in his bag over on the other side. He asked his caddie to “Hand me a wedge, mate” but nothing was getting “handed” to him. So the caddie launched it across, and Day took his cut out in barefeet and with his pants above his kneecaps.

The shot went out of the hazard and through the fairway, but Day would get up-and-down from there for an amazing par. We feel safe saying it was the most adventurous and miraculous par of the tournament.
