It’s not uncommon, either at professional golf events or some local outing, to win a sum of money or a new car if you make a hole-in-one. What’s a little more rare, however, is a winning a rocketship ride to space.
But the European Tour’s Andy Sullivan will be on his way to space thanks to that ace at the par-3 15th hole of the KLM Open. The prize comes from XCOR Space Expeditions and was valued at $95,000. The company’s CEO said before the tournament, “With this prize we wish to create awareness among the public that space is now also accessible for everyone.” (via Ryan Ballengee/GolfNewsNet).
“Accessible to everyone” or to professional golfers capable of firing darts into this 163-yard par-3 at Kennemer Golf Club in the Netherlands. The trip is estimated to go 39 miles up into the space, leaving from the Mojave Desert near the end of next year.
At the start of the week, Sullivan tweeted that capturing the prize would mean winning a trip home. (h/t Jason Sobel)
