Tiger Woods on his next swing coach: ‘I may just do it on my own’

The 14-time major winner split with his third professional coach last month, prompting speculation on who was up next for the most coveted coaching gig in golf. But in an update to his blog, Woods says he may not hire anyone.

USA TODAY Sports

Tiger Woods made his triumphant return to blogging on Thursday afternoon, filing an update to his own website, TigerWoods.com. The post is the usual cheery and sanitized update on recent business partnerships, what he’s doing at home, his health, and now his coach.

It’s the last topic where Tiger provided the most revelatory information, and even then it was just a small morsel. There’s been much speculation, discussion, and ranking of potential candidates for Tiger’s next swing coach since he fired Sean Foley last month. One opinion was that no one knows Tiger’s swing better than himself, and that at this stage in his career he should just go it alone instead of trying to rebuild once more with his fourth professional coach. Woods specifically hinted that may be the route he goes:

As for my coaching situation, there is no hard-and-set rule on this. I may just do it on my own. I’m keeping my options very, very open.

The options are open, but Woods writing and publicizing “I may just do it on my own” is a signal that this is the way he probably goes for awhile. He never sheds light or offers info on anything, especially a potential hire like this. Regardless of which way he decides, it’s good to see Tiger heeding and considering the advice of Matt Ufford.

As for his health, Tiger updates that he hasn’t yet swung a golf club but hopes to do so later this month or in early October. He has, however, taken some “shadow swings” in the mirror. He may be using the mirror more and more over the next year if he decides to coach himself.
