Rory McIlroy 4-putts same green on 2nd straight day at BMW Championship

Even the No. 1 player in the world can look like a weekend chop up on the green.

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

For his sake, I hope Rory McIlroy never has to play the 12th hole at Cherry Hills ever again. The No. 1 player in the world four-putted the 12th green at the historic Denver club for the second straight day at the BMW Championship. At least this one started a little farther out, making his first stroke from about 21 feet as opposed to four feet. But one he blasted that first one past the hole, it was the same ping-pong sequence of comebackers we witnessed on Saturday afternoon. The distances, according to PGA Tour were:

  • 19 feet
  • 2 feet, 9 inches
  • 3 feet
  • 4 feet, 9 inches

The third round four-putt led to a triple bogey on the par-3, but Sunday’s final round mess resulted in only a double. Despite that disaster, Rory should still finish his round under-par and near the top 10. He will definitely still be inside the top 5 in the FedEx Cup standings for next week’s TOUR Championship, so he can still win the overall playoffs with a victory in Atlanta. But these two days in Denver have provided some of the most ignominious moments in a remarkable year, and on the same exact green.
