BMW Championship purse: Winner’s payout is $1.44 million of $8 million total

Billy Horschel leads late at Cherry Hills and is closing in on the largest winner’s check of his career.

The lucrative FedEx Cup rolls on in Denver Sunday, where another $8 million purse will be doled out for the 70 remaining players at the BMW Championship. With no cut this week, all 70 will take home at least some cash from the purse, which is just a smaller part of the $67 million paid out over this four-week postseason stretch.

All four events have an $8 million purse, with each winner earning a $1.44 million payout. But in addition to that cash, there’s also a huge bonus money pool -- $37 million in total -- given out to every single player who makes the playoffs, and even 25 guys beyond the top 125 in the standings whose seasons ended three weeks ago. The biggest bonus check is the well-known $10 million total given out as the grand prize, but just being around the top 10 in the final FEC standings is worth a huge chunk of change.

The cut down at the BMW is the largest of the postseason, with only the top 30 of the remaining 70 players going on to Atlanta. But even if your season ends Sunday at Cherry Hills, you’re still walking away with six-figures in bonus cash.

This, of course, all comes on top of the money these guys are making in the instant tournament. Billy Horschel has the late lead at the BMW, just six days after he imploded on the 18th hole of the Deutsche Bank Championship and chunked one into a hazard.

Horschel had a good chance to at least tie the leader, Chris Kirk, with a birdie but that chunk instantly gave it away. Now he’s right back in it, and on the verge of cashing the largest winner’s check of his career. Horschel already sits on $6,559,792 in career earnings.

It’s been an underwhelming season for Horschel, who hasn’t won since the 2013 Zurich Classic. This second career win would earn him a $1.44 million winner’s check and then rocket him into the top 5 of the FedEx Cup standings, giving him a shot at the $10 million next week without needing outside help. Here are the payout totals for the top 25 at this week’s BMW (ties will affect these totals):

UPDATE: Horschel did close it out for the winner’s check, and is now No. 2 in the FEC standings. Here are the final payout totals:
