2014 BMW Championship results: Billy Horschel wins at Cherry Hills

Billy Horschel’s postseason form continues at the BMW Championship, where he earned the biggest win of his career and is now set up for an overall FedEx Cup title.

It didn’t take long for Billy Horschel to atone for that ghastly chunk on the final hole of the Deutsche Bank Championship, Just six days after standing in the 18th fairway in Boston with a good chance to at least tie the leader there, Horschel rolled to the biggest win of his career at Cherry Hills, taking the 2014 BMW Championship by two strokes.

Horschel was in prime position at TPC Boston to tie Chris Kirk on Monday, with a birdie a very realistic outcome and a tourney-winning eagle even a possibility. But from 206 yards out, he hit what he said was the worst swing of his week, coming some 50-plus yards short and chunking one right into the hazard.

It was one of the worst shots you’ll ever see from a player in contention on the final hole of a tournament. But it was just one of many around a strong week from Horschel. He clearly kept the form rolling out in Denver this week, and now he has the biggest payday of his career, a $1.44 million winner’s check.

Horschel’s victory was built largely on his third round on Saturday, when he carved up the shorter classic layout. Through the first two rounds, he hovered in the middle of the pack but a third-round 63 shot him into the lead, and with a multi-shot cushion for the final 18 holes.

Horschel didn’t post nearly as many red numbers on Sunday, but he didn’t need to after that 63. He went out with a 1-under 33, and then poured in nine straight pars on the back nine to stay comfortably in front. He drilled clutch par-saves at the 10th, 15th, and 16th to stay out in front. The putt at the 10th set the tone for the rest of his back nine.

The season started with Horschel as a potential Ryder Cup candidate, but his underwhelming play took him off the radar over the second half of the summer. This FedEx Cup run, however, reinforces that he’s one of the better young American players and someone who should contend on the Tour for years to come. This is the biggest win of his career to date and he’s now No. 2 in the FedEx Cup standings with a good chance to win the playoffs and $10 million in Atlanta.

Horschel didn’t really have to sweat in Denver, and those pars were good enough as Sergio Garcia, Bubba Watson, and other challengers never really pushed him over the final three or four holes. Garcia was the closest at making a run, but a triple bogey 8 at the 17th hole ended his chances. Here are the final results from the BMW Championship:
