Dottie Pepper will be the first woman on a CBS Masters broadcast

To Dottie Pepper, there’s nothing more exciting than covering the Masters, and that’s just what she’ll be doing in her new job as the first woman to call golf for CBS Sports.

“To me, it’s not about being the first woman to do it,” Pepper told SB Nation by phone on Thursday. “It’s about being a broadcaster, and why the heck wouldn’t you want to cover the Masters, whoever you are?”

While Pepper will step in for David Feherty, who joined NBC Sports after his stint with CBS ended recently, the former LPGA Tour star believes there’s no replacing golf’s resident comedian.

“I’m not funny, so there’s no comparison,” she said. “I deliver it straight and ... try to set the stage and get out of the way.

“Give the viewers the information and then let them decide, let them sit back and watch,” Pepper added. “They’re not tuning in to listen to us. They’re tuning in to watch great athletes play golf.”

That may be, but Pepper’s knowledgeable, no-nonsense approach is a treat for anyone who watches golf -- and that includes Sean McManus, CBS Sports chair, who recruited the veteran broadcaster.

“Dottie is one of the most respected and insightful analysts in golf,” McManus said in a statement.

In fact, Pepper was content with her job at ESPN and was not looking for another opportunity.

“They [CBS] came after me,” Pepper said.

Pepper followed her LPGA career with an eight-year run at NBC Sports, which she left purportedly to cut down on travel. It turns out that becoming a PGA of America board member involved just as much time on airplanes as jet-setting from one golf event to another.

So, how’s that semi-retirement going, Dottie?

“I’m only working weekends for CBS,” she said with a laugh. “I’ll only do two events that are four days, the Masters and the PGA [Championship].”

She has two more years on her contract at ESPN, for which she will continue doing SportsCenter, among other tasks. Her first gig for CBS will be in January at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

All that will have to take a back seat for now, though, as the rabid Patriots fan warms up her TV for the latest stop on the Tom Brady Revenge Tour, when New England meets the Colts in a DeflateGate rematch on Sunday Night Football.

“I will not be missing that one,” Pepper said.
