Tiger Woods was absent from the PGA of America’s grand unveiling of Davis Love III as the 2016 Ryder Cup captain and may not be on the team that welcomes the Europeans to Hazeltine, but he indulged in a bit of self-congratulatory back-patting from afar when he threw his complete support behind DL3.

Woods, along with Love, Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler, and seven others, was on the task force created after the disaster at Gleneagles to pick a skipper for 2016 and design a blueprint for future teams. With the former world No. 1 on a self-imposed hiatus from the PGA Tour and not in this week’s Honda Classic field, Mickelson and Fowler sat behind the once-and-future captain during Tuesday’s Love-fest at the PGA’s Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., HQ.

Following the ceremony officially tapping 2012 skipper Love for a return gig, the PGA tweeted out Woods’ support for his captain.

Woods, who is one of six guys now sitting on the sub-task force that the original panel begat, also blessed the process, of which he was a part, that led to Love’s confirmation.

Mickelson and Fowler are playing this week’s event, which is practically in Woods’ back yard, but when the struggling 14-time major champion will next tee it up in competition remains unclear.
