Masters 2015: Tee times, pairings for Saturday’s round

Old friends Tiger and Sergio get to spend four-plus hours together on a nice Saturday stroll at Augusta National.

It’s moving day at the Masters and the afternoon half of the tee sheet is absolutely loaded with stars of the game. Of course, all of them are a mile off the lead thanks to Jordan Spieth’s record opening 36 holes. But very few of the top names missed the cut this year, and there will be no shortage of world-class talents trying to pull off the chasedown on moving day.

While Spieth lords over everything in that anchor tee time at 2:55 p.m. ET, the juiciest tee time on the sheet is at 1:15 p.m. That’s when the friendly duo of Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia will go off the 1st tee. The 14-time major winner and the precocious Spaniard have a bit of a history, most of it common knowledge for even the most casual golf fan. There have been relatively few opportunities for the two to play together since that blowup at the 2013 Players Championship, and there’s been no real incidents since that weeks-long contretemps.

But every movement, handshake and look will be caught and analyzed on Saturday. Tiger was going to be in the spotlight anyway, but this just adds to the drama around his round. Sergio acknowledged it pretty quickly on Twitter after the pairings came out, in what seemed like an attempt to deflate any of the hype surrounding the pairing.

So coy with that wink emoji, Sergio. In reality, the two will probably shake hands on the first tee, say hello, and then play their round without any words exchanged for the rest of the day. It’s a major championship and they’ve got enough going on that getting caught up in some petty squabble doesn’t seem likely. Then again, you’d think they would avoid the Players drama when the two were right at the top of leaderboard on the weekend at the game’s “5th major.”

Aside from Tiger and Sergio, the afternoon will also feature Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy, Bubba Watson, Adam Scott, Jason Day, Ernie Els, Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson ... I mean, it is loaded from about 12:45 p.m. ET. For drama’s sake, it’s a bit of a shame that Spieth is boat racing them all and they are not all bunched up within five shots of each other. Spieth looks pretty unbeatable right now, but if this were to get close, that’s the kind of talent that would pull it off over a 36-hole stretch on a course with red numbers available. And the overnight rains should only soften some things up, yielding the potential for another mid-60s round. The green jackets typically set the course up toughest on Saturday, but the weather may prevent them from making it as difficult as they’d like.

There’s also the problem of Spieth taking a blowtorch to everything. He’ll reignite things just before 3 p.m. with Charley Hoffman, who is a good five shots back. After breaking the 36-hole mark, the target is now Tiger Woods overall scoring record of 18-under 270, which was set when he was just 21 years old back in 1997.

Tiger and Sergio, Phil, Rory, and Spieth chasing records ... buckle in for a fun moving day. Here’s the full tee sheet for Saturday’s third round:
