This impossible Phil Mickelson putt even shocked Verne Lundquist

Phil adds a highlight to the history of the 16th green.

Michael Madrid-USA TODAY Sports

Now that the mania of Tiger Woods playing good golf has passed, all attention has turned to the last few groups out on the course. And it’s Tiger’s contemporary, Phil Mickelson, making the biggest late move. The three-time green jacket winner is in solo second place behind Jordan Spieth, and is now 12-under after dropping this BOMB at the par-3 16th.

Verne Lundquist, who has seen so much at that perch on the 16th, could scream out “Oh my gosh.” That’s an incredibly tough pin placement on that green, and once Phil’s ball funneled back down the hill, a two-putt par would have been a success.

Here was leader Jordan Spieth’s reaction as he walked down the 15th fairway and the roar went up from the gallery at the bottom of that hill.
