Jordan Spieth made history at Augusta National on Sunday, becoming just the fifth player to complete a wire-to-wire victory to claim the green jacket. The victory is a huge career accomplishment for the 21-year-old as he now joins the ranks of major championship winners. Spieth was rewarded with the green jacket for his effort, but will also take home the largest payout in Masters history as he won $1.8 million of the $10 million purse.
Masters purse 2015: Jordan Spieth takes home $1.8 million in prize money
The 21-year-old won his first major and took the huge payday that goes with it.
The $10 million purse was a new record, up $1 million from last season and $2 million from 2013. Spieth was the biggest beneficiary, taking home nearly $200,000 more than Bubba Watson won last year. Several big tournaments have increased their payouts in recent years, including the PGA Championship and Players Championship, both of which bumped up to $10 million purses in recent years. The Masters opted to join them this season, making it the most prestigious event to win and now tied for the most-lucrative.
For Spieth, the $1.8 million purse caps an amazing run of success. The victory was his second in last four events to go along with a pair of second-place finishes. The Masters victory was by far the biggest payout of his career, but the run of success gives him more than $4.1 million in earnings in the last month. His worldwide on-course earnings now surge beyond $14 million. Not bad for a guy in the midst of just his second full season as a card-carrying member of the PGA Tour. It’s likely only the tip of the iceberg too, as Spieth is one of the rising stars in golf and shows no sign of this being the only time he contends for major championships.
Spieth was the big winner this week at Augusta, but several players will take home large consolation checks. Ties ultimately figured heavily into the final payout. A total of 21 players took home six-figures, with Russell Henley winning $120,000 for finishing in 21st place. Justin Rose and Phil Mickelson finished tied for second and each won $880,000. Tiger Woods struggled on Sunday, dropping to a tie for 17th, but that was still good enough to earn $155,000.
