In previous years, there would only be 32 players remaining on Thursday at the WGC-Cadillac Match Play. This year, the full field of 64 remains alive on Day 2 thanks to the switch to pool play for the first three days. The event now begins with a round robin and players will continue to battle for the top spot in their pool on Thursday.

The WGC match play continues with the second day of pool play.

For some, like Rory McIlroy, Thursday is an opportunity to go 2-0 and keep on pace to advance. The player with the best record in their pool at the end of Friday will advance to Saturday while the other three will head home. For others, like Jason Day, a good showing on Thursday is vital after losing their opening matches. A 2-0 start doesn’t guarantee the player will advance to the weekend, but an 0-2 start almost surely guarantees they wont. The new format means considerably more golf and intrigue during the early days. While Friday will be the deciding day of pool play, Thursday could be the most exciting with every player still with a shot, but many in desperate need of a win. That includes plenty of big names. In addition to Day, Justin Rose, Matt Kuchar, Adam Scott and Henrik Stenson all lost on Wednesday.
PGA Tour fans don’t get to see match play events often, but thanks to extended television coverage and the event being played on the West Coast, viewers will have the chance to watch plenty of live golf again on Thursday. It isn’t quite to the level of a major championship with a handful of additional streams to supplement the coverage, but the television and online coverage from Harding Park is still a significant jump from the usual. Golf channel will once again increase coverage to six hours of live coverage, including prime time coverage.
Players won’t begin to tee off until nearly 1 p.m. ET and coverage will begin a couple hours later at 4 p.m. It will continue until 10 p.m. when the final matches wrap up. There won’t be featured group or dedicated hole streams, but the Golf Channel television coverage will also be available online via a stream from NBC Live Extra. For those who miss anything live as it happens, Golf Channel will re-air it’s broadcast beginning at 11 p.m.
