Why Bubba Watson can’t serve Waffle House for his Masters champions dinner

No commercial brands allowed!

For the second time in three years, much of Tuesday of Masters week will be devoted to speculation on Bubba Watson’s champions dinner menu. Only at the Masters could a traditional meal become such a notable part of the week.

For his first dinner, back in 2013, Watson served an incredibly safe and bland meal. Most expected a curveball, like fried gator, but Bubba went with a tame Caesar salad, grilled chicken, corn, potatoes, and mac and cheese. There was also confetti cake with vanilla ice cream.

So what will Bubba do for an encore? There has to be something more interesting on the menu than that first attempt.

The initial queries on the menu centered on whether Bubba would serve Waffle House. You’ll recall that’s one of his favorite restaurants. He tweets about it regularly and went to the Augusta Waffle House late night last year after winning his second green jacket.

He feasted on a double grilled cheese and hash browns “scattered and covered.” Then he left that much-publicized $148 tip.

But according to Bubba, he’s not allowed to have Waffle House brought in for his meal. “You can’t use a name brand,” he told reporters on a conference call in advance of the Masters. So no Waffle House for all the dignitaries and legends. However, it will stay basic. “I eat plain,” he admitted in the same call.

Bubba said he knew exactly what was going on the menu before he won last year but he’s not telling anyone. “It’s the one chance that I can just hold everything from everybody, so I’m doing it.” Unless Nick Faldo plays spoiler and tweets the menu out again, Bubba won’t be divulging the contents of the meal until Wednesday morning.
