Masters odds 2015: Tiger Woods’ game might be back but don’t bet on him

The Tiger Woods hype train is rolling down the tracks after some positive work on a Monday practice round.

You might think that the glowing reports of Tiger Woods’ Monday practice round at Augusta National would move his Masters odds to win much lower, but most books have not altered their line on the four-time Masters champ. Woods is still 28/1 to win online at Bovada, which is where he stood Sunday night when all we knew is that he would play but had no clue about the state of his ravaged short game. Jeff Sherman of the Las Vegas SuperBook and GolfOdds.com still has Tiger at 40/1 on Tuesday morning of Masters week.

Woods hopped off his plane on Monday, went straight to Augusta and proceeded to hit about 70 pitch and chip shots without incident. It was a departure from all the ugly shanks, skulls and chunks we saw at the end of 2014 and beginning of 2015. Then he went out on the course and it got better. One writer said he could have shot a 30 on the front nine.

So is Tiger back? No, probably not. But the Monday work has to be a little encouraging for a player who was last seen embarrassing himself. It’s not wise to bet on him to win, but maaaaybe he’ll make the cut now? It’s pretty dangerous to extrapolate much from a Monday practice round. Tiger is back out there Tuesday morning with Mark O’Meara again, so we’ll see where his game is at after another tour through a place he knows so well at this point in his career.

While there may not be a shift in Tiger’s odds on Tuesday, you have to expect a drop if we keep getting comparable positive reports of his game. The positive momentum from golf watchers on Twitter was wild on Monday and that “Tiger’s back” train was off and rolling. That will likely continue before he hits his first shot on Thursday morning. Just stay away.

Rory McIlroy is now a 6/1 favorite (he was 11/2 at the start of the week). That line should not move much and he’s definitely going to stay in that top spot. Tiger being on the grounds should only help Rory, who was going to have all the pressure and hype around completing the career slam before the Tiger show arrived and took all that shine. Now he can work away the first three days of the week as everyone else focuses on his Nike stablemate.

Here are the Tuesday morning odds to win (via Bovada):
