Tiger Woods knows he’s old enough to be the father of some of the guys he’ll be trying to beat beginning Thursday at the Masters, but it’s unclear if young gun Jordan Spieth was still in nappies when the then-PGA Tour sophomore won his first green jacket in 1997.

“Competing is still the same,” Woods, in his first official press conference since returning from a two-month break, said on Tuesday at Augusta. “I’m trying to beat everybody out there. That hasn’t changed.”
What has changed quite a bit is the cast of characters atop most leaderboards these days, and 21-year-old Spieth is one of the favorites to win this year’s edition of the men’s iconic first major of the season.
“The only difference is that, yeah, I won the Masters when Jordan was in diapers,” said Woods, who supposedly has passed the torch to Spieth, Rory McIlroy and other young bucks. “That’s the difference is that guys are now younger, a whole generation of kids are coming out.”
Woods lapped the field by a record-breaking 12 strokes in ’97 but Spieth, one of the kids who grew up idolizing Tiger, probably doesn’t remember watching the tournament live.
“I can’t confirm that,” Spieth, born in 1993, quipped about the status of his under garments back then. “I’m embarrassed; I just came out of diapers a couple years ago, so I probably was.
“Let’s see, I was 3, almost 4,” Spieth said. “So I don’t know, are kids still in diapers at 3? Pull‑ups?”
