Masters leaderboard 2015: Jordan Spieth is carving up Augusta National

The 21-year-old is putting on a show and threatening a major championship record.

Rob Schumacher-USA TODAY Sports

Jordan Spieth came into the Masters playing as well as anyone in the world, with a win and two second-place finishes in his last three events. That form has carried over to Augusta -- he’s racking up birdies and leads everyone at 8-under, and he’s threatening the single-round major championship scoring record of 62. He needs two more birdies in his last four holes, and no bogeys, to get there.

In just his second Masters appearance, Spieth is making his way around the course like a seasoned veteran, racking up birdies early and late while adding in a few seemingly impossible shots just for show. Stuck in the rough and behind a tree after an errant tee shot? No problem, Spieth used that opportunity to drill a perfect shot that nearly went in at the 14th.

Instead of holing out, he had to merely settle for just another birdie to drop to 8-under. The 21-year-old has eight birdies through 14 holes and is three strokes clear of the rest of the field. He entered the tournament as one of the betting favorites, but if he continues to play like this then the only obstacle in his path may be whether he can challenge the tournament record (18-under, set by Tiger Woods).

Spieth is going so well that even when he hits a bad shot, like he did off the tee at No. 13, he catches some good fortune.

He capitalized on that break for a birdie. Conditions are great for scoring on Thursday, but Spieth is taking it to another level.

Greg Norman and Nick Price are the only players to ever shoot a 63 in the Masters, with the last time occurring in 1996 when Norman did it. There have been 26 major championship rounds of 63, but never a 62. Spieth needs to get to 10-under to hit that number.

Here is a snapshot of the current leaderboard. You can find a live leaderboard at Masters.com.
