2015 Wells Fargo Championship: Tee times, pairings for Sunday’s round

Everyone is futilely chasing Rory McIlroy on Sunday in Charlotte.

There are 73 players left in the field Sunday at the Wells Fargo Championship but it would appear 72 of them are all playing for second place at this point. Rory McIlroy has gone out on some comfortable Sunday strolls before in his career, but this final round at Quail Hollow may be his easiest yet.

McIlroy will start the final round with a four-shot lead over Webb Simpson, and a seven-shot lead over the third place Robert Streb. So it’s basically Rory and Webb in the final pairing, and that’s not exactly a fair fight, even though Simpson is a Charlotte local and a member at this track. Rory lit Quail Hollow, one of the pros’ favorite courses on the annual circuit, on fire Saturday with a new course record 61. It broke the previous course record he set back in 2010 during that Sunday final round that announced his presence with his first win stateside.

We knew Rory was the world No. 1 and the class of the field, but the way he overwhelmed everyone and everything on Saturday still exceeded any realistic expectations. McIlroy made nine birdies in a 10-hole stretch and 11 birdies total. He put Twitter on #59Watch, which is astounding given that Quail Hollow is a par-72 course and is supposed to be a relatively challenging one. The first straight birdies from Nos. 12 to 16 opened the door for golf’s magic number. Rory needed two more on the final two holes to break 60, but *settled* for two simple pars, a course record and an insurmountable lead.

McIlroy will now start the final round as a 1/16 favorite to win his 11th PGA Tour event and his second in the last three weeks. He started the entire tournament as a 3/1 favorite, which are outrageous odds for golf -- Tiger-in-his-prime numbers. Simpson is a world class player, a major winner and has that local knowledge. But he’s no match for McIlroy, who is not going to implode or come back to the field.

The Ulsterman has converted six of his eight 54-hole leads on the PGA Tour. This is the first time Simpson has ever played a Sunday round on Tour with Rory, and he’ll likely need a course-record round to make it a game. McIlroy has shot par or better in 16 of his 21 rounds at this venue, so an implosion is highly unlikely given his history here and his current form. They go off at 1:45 p.m. ET for an estimated 6 p.m. finish on CBS.
