Tiger awful on par-5s, finishes with ugly 75

Tiger Woods ended Friday’s second round with one of those patented Tiger celebratory fist pumps, but you were mistaken if you thought it was the start of any positive run at this week’s Players Championship. That putt pushed Tiger through to the weekend, making the cut right on the number. He started Saturday’s round at the bottom of the leaderboard, and stayed there all day after an ugly outward 40 on a front nine that included the wrong type of personal record.

After making the cut, Woods was adamant that anyone who got to the weekend still had a chance to win. The spread was only eight shots from last place to the leaders. But the way he was hitting the ball through 36 holes, Tiger’s chances of making a charge into contention seemed slim. They were gone by his second hole on Saturday morning.

Woods makes a mess on front 9 at The Players

Throughout his career, Tiger Woods’ most reliable path to success was dominating the par-5s. He overwhelmed modern golf course setups, posting birdies and eagles at par-5s and zipping past his competitors. If he wants to win, or even contend these days, he has to get his red numbers at the par-5s (as much as 2-under par each round).

Due to wildness off the tee, Tiger repeatedly fails to capitalize on those scoring opportunities. He puts himself in a bad spot right away, and then scrambles just to get it back on line and save a par. That’s been a recurring problem since he won his last major.

Tiger hits a drive short of the forward tees

Tiger Woods has been yanking drives into trees down the left side of the fairways at TPC Sawgrass all week. This may not have been his ugliest swing, but the result of his drive at the 2nd on Saturday morning was certainly the worst.

The hole calls for a draw, but Woods hooked one into the trees directly into front of the tee. The ball ricocheted out across the opening in front of the tee and ended up in the right pine straw ... about 70 yards short of the START of the cut of the fairway, and the forward tee.
