Phil Mickelson’s St. Jude Classic gesture shows why he’s golf fans’ favorite to win U.S. Open

Phil Mickelson capped his FedEx St. Jude Classic performance on Sunday with a gesture that illustrated why the five-time major champion is favorite of so many golf fans.

After putting the finishing touches on a final-round 5-under 65 in his final U.S. Open tuneup in Memphis by drilling a 25-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole, Mickelson plucked his ball out of the cup, tipped his cap and, well, watch ...

That caddie bib the young St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital patient is wearing -- and which Lefty signed, along with the ball and his glove -- was courtesy of Mickelson’s long-time looper Jim Mackay. The standing O she received was all Phil.

“We’re wishing you the best of luck, you know that?” said Mickelson, who closed out the week tied for third at 8-under. “You’ve got a lot of people pulling for you.”

The same can certainly be said of Mickelson, who hopes to complete the career grand slam this week at Chambers Bay.
