Phil Mickelson, who got off to a strong start Thursday at Chambers Bay, is destined to win the U.S. Open this week, according to seven-time PGA Tour victor Peter Jacobson.
Phil Mickelson’s ‘fate’ is to win 2015 U.S. Open, says Peter Jacobson
The planets are aligned for a Phil Mickelson victory this week at Chambers Bay, says NBC Sports’ Peter Jacobson.

Lefty, six times a bridesmaid at his national championship, will finally lift the U.S. Open trophy because, essentially, it’s his time, Jacobson, a golf analyst with NBC Sports, told SB Nation by phone on Thursday before Mickelson teed off on the first hole at 7:33 a.m. PT.
“Mickelson wins because he’s a fan favorite,” Jacobson prognosticated. “He deserves it, he’s great with the people and he’s going to complete the career grand slam. He’s going to have won all four majors come Sunday night. Fate.”
Jacobson posited a less ethereal reason why he picked Mickelson to win the one major title that has thus far eluded him -- he has the demeanor to stay calm on the fast and fiery links-style course that is hosting this week’s grand slam event.
“The most important thing this week is patience. ... You’ve got to take the good shots with the bad shots,” said Jacobson. “You’re going to see a lot of great shots, you’re going to see a lot of bad shots. You’re going to see a lot of bad bounces. you’re going to see good shots looking like they’re going to be on the green end up in a bunker or end up in the high grass.
“More than great shots, players are going to have to be patient and take it easy,” he added.
Jacobson also liked another 45-year-old whose patience could pay off this week. “Slow and steady” Jim Furyk, who won the 2003 U.S. Open, is someone who puts “one foot in front of the other,” he said.
But Jake Trout’s doppelgänger was sticking with the birthday boy.
“Mickelson is the sentimental favorite,” Jacobson said.
After two birdies in his first six holes, the popular five-time major champion, who turned 45 on Tuesday, held the very early 2-under lead at Chambers Bay.
