2015 U.S. Open leaderboard: Dustin Johnson, Henrik Stenson tie for the clubhouse lead at 5-under

Despite talk of a possible over-par winning score, a few players found red numbers on Thursday.

It turns out a little water did wonders for scoring conditions at the U.S. Open. The USGA watered the course overnight and used relatively tame pin placements for the first round, leading to several players dipping well into the red during the first round. The field is currently led by Dustin Johnson and Henrik Stenson who both managed to shoot 5-under rounds of 65.

Johnson was nearly flawless in the first round, carding two birdies in his first three holes. He made the turn at 3-under and continued to pile up birdies with four more dipping him to 6-under through 16 holes. With a Par 5 among the final two holes, it appeared Johnson might go really low. Instead, he limped in with a par at No. 8 and a bogey on his final hole of the day.

“I just made a bad swing on nine,” Johnson said after the round. “That was probably the only bad swing I made all day.”

Despite the finishing bogey, Johnson turned in a very good round. He hit 14-of-18 greens in regulation and found the fairway 79 percent of the time. With his distance off the tee, Johnson is a very strong contender if he continues to hit greens in regulation.

Stenson used a dominant closing stretch to tie Johnson at 5-under. He sat at 1-under through 13, but birdied three of his final four holes to shoot a 31 on the back nine and earn a share of the current lead. After the round, Stenson said he was very happy with his ball striking. He also putted well, needing 27 putts to complete the round.

World No. 1 Rory McIlroy did not have as much luck to open the tournament. Four bogeys to go along with two birdies left him at 2-over following the first round. He hit just 12 greens in regulation and missed several short putts.

“I made a couple of bad strokes coming in and it cost me a couple shots,” McIlroy said after the round.
