Jason Day was in the process of making a complete mess at the first hole at Chambers Bay on Friday. A couple of errant shots at the par-5 -- including sending his previous bunker shot through the green -- left him still some 40 yards off the green. Facing a very tough shot with little green to work with, it appeared Day was staring at a bogey and would be lucky to escape with a par.
Jason Day holes out for impossible birdie, throws his club in celebration
That’s one way to bypass the challenging Chambers Bay greens.

Instead, he holed out for a birdie.
With the slope of the green, stopping that ball would have been impossible had it not gone in. It would have rolled some 20 feet beyond the hole. Day didn’t have to worry about any of that and instead somehow picked up a birdie. He followed that up with another birdie on the next hole and is now in the thick of contention at 3-under. Hole out on a couple more impossible approach shots and he might lead by the end of the round.
