2015 U.S. Open leaderboard: Dustin Johnson tied for lead, Phil Mickelson struggling

Dustin Johnson is playing well again and back in the lead.

John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

Dustin Johnson held a share of the 18-hole lead at the 2015 U.S. Open and he’s well on his way to claiming at least a share of the 36-hole lead as well. Johnson is 2-under on his round and 7-under for the tournament, good for a share of the lead with Patrick Reed.

Johnson hasn’t quite played as well on Friday as he did during the opening round, but he continues to hit the ball beautifully off the tee. He’s consistently found fairways and has been in prime position to attack the pins at Chambers Bay. He hit 14-of-18 greens in regulation during the first round, and while he hasn’t duplicated that success, he has capitalized on a few of his birdie tries. Johnson has birdied four holes in the second round, helping him stay in a share of the lead. There is no question Johnson has the game to win a major championship. Consistency over four rounds has kept him from winning one, but he’s looked solid thus far.

Reed has been up-and-down on Friday. He surged into the lead at 6-under, before a couple of bogeys dropped him off the pace. He jumped right back into contention, recording a birdie on No. 11 before sinking a long eagle putt on the Par 4 No. 12 to grab a share of the lead.

Jordan Spieth sits in third place at 5-under while Branden Grace is 4-under and in fourth place. The afternoon wave has been more difficult and the cut line has risen to 4-over. There is a chance it could even creep to 5-over if players continue to struggle. Phil Mickelson is right on the line at 4-under. He’s struggled in the second round and is 5-over through 16 holes.
