The greens at the U.S. Open are very challenging. Fast and firm thanks to dry conditions combined with massive undulations leave some precarious and difficult putts. As a result, there have been more than a few really poor putts. Ben Martin’s attempt on No. 2 on Saturday set the new standard for worst putt.
Ben Martin hits worst putt of the U.S. Open, winds up in a bunker
Just a touch firm.
You know a putt is bad when it completely fools the camera man and they are forced to quickly pan away just to catch the ball speeding away from the hole.
That is an easy way to turn a birdie attempt into a quick double bogey. The greens are certainly quick, but he thumped that putt with way too much pace. There was just no chance that ball was going to stop once it flew past the hole. With how sloped the greens are at Chambers Bay, it’s easy to catch a slope in the wrong direction. He was forced to chip out of the bunker, then missed his bogey attempt and had to tap in for a double bogey. Although it dropped him off the lead, he does have the distinction of recording a very unique three-putt.
