2015 The Memorial Tournament: Tee times, pairings for Friday’s round at Muirfield Village

Tiger Woods will play the second round at the Memorial in the afternoon wave and he’ll likely need a better round than his opening 18 if he wants to make the cut.

The 2015 edition of the Memorial may be that rare instance where we actually get through the week in Columbus without the weather making the schedule a complete mess. Jack Nicklaus’ tournament, hosted at one of his design masterpieces in Muirfield Village, is notorious for getting crushed with storms every year. But Thursday’s first round went off without incident and more favorable weather is scheduled for the full 120-man field on Friday. Getting through the first two days before the cut is made would be an achievement and have everything in order for an on-time finish over the weekend.

Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler are the two big names that will headline the morning side of the draw in the second round. But it’s the third member of their group, defending champ Hideki Matsuyama, that sits on top of the leaderboard. Matsuyama is one of the most talented young players in the world. He might just be the best ball striker in the world and one of the best tee-to-green. But his putting is mediocre and has held him back from greater success. Despite that, he’s been in contention at the majors and some of the game’s top events, and now he’s in position to realistically defend his title at Muirfield.

Jordan Spieth is the top name on the first page of the leaderboard playing in the afternoon, but that side of the draw will be dominated by the usual Tiger Woods show. Woods tees off at 1:05 p.m. ET, one group ahead of Spieth. At 1-over, the five-time Memorial winner will need to grind again to make the cut. He’s never missed one at this event, but this current iteration of Tiger is not exactly what we’re used to seeing in early June.

Woods was a mess off the tee in the first round, but other areas of his game were good enough to turn in a respectable 1-over 73 score. The number didn’t reflect how much of a scramble it was out there and how ugly it looked off the tee on almost every hole. He finished hitting just 4 of 14 fairways, and after missing two drives on his 9th hole alone (the first sailed out of bounds), it looked like Tiger might bomb out early. But a 3-under second nine put him in a spot to at least make the weekend. He’ll start the second round in a tie for 85th place, going out with Jason Day and Patrick Reed. They’ll be the featured group during the Golf Channel afternoon broadcast.
