PGA Championship 2015 leaderboard: Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth yet to make a charge

The world Nos. 1 and 2 are making their way around Whistling Straits, but birdies have been hard to come by.

The afternoon at the 2015 PGA Championship is proving to be more difficult thanks to wind that has picked up throughout the day. The result has been a struggle for the afternoon wave with many players having difficulty successfully navigating the course. While a host of players posted red numbers during the morning action, that’s been harder to do in the afternoon.

Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy are prime examples. The top two players in the world are off to up-and-down starts as they try to dip into red numbers. Spieth opened the round with 10 straight pars, while McIlroy mixed two bogeys with two birdies to also sit at even through 10 holes. Scrambling has been a key for both as they’ve recovered well from poor shots to stay level.

Spieth hit a wonderful chip shot from a difficult spot on No. 6 to keep his par streak in tact.

McIlroy’s par save on No. 5 was even better as he climbed into a water hazard to get up and down.

Any concern over McIlroy’s surgically repaired ankle appears to be for nothing. He looks perfectly healthy and if the injury is impacting his game, it isn’t showing up in his distance off the tee.

It’s been a much more up-and-down day for Phil Mickelson. He’s 1-over through 10 holes, mixing three bogeys with two birdies in the early going. The entire field is looking up at Dustin Johnson who remains in the lead at 6-under. David Lingmerth has made the best run of the afternoon and is 5-under.
