Here comes Jordan Spieth making moves up the PGA leaderboard with a chip-in on one of Whistling Straits’ most difficult holes.
Jordan Spieth’s opening round jolted to life on Thursday with a chip-in from just off the 11th green and he’s back at it again on Friday. This hole-out came from a much more challenging scenario, a bunker just in front of the 18th green.
Spieth popped it out of the sand, got the ball to carry some junk in between the trap and the green, and then nestled it right into the cup for the birdie.
As Ian Baker-Finch noted, a three on that hole should feel like an eagle. Par should feel like a birdie and an escape. It’s an incredibly difficult setup full of disaster and crooked numbers.

— Golf Central (@GolfCentral) August 14, 2015 Rory McIlroy made a double bogey there just minutes after Spieth’s hole out. The three shot swing moved Spieth into a tie for 13th place and just three shots off the lead. McIlroy, on the other hand, dropped 17 spots into a tie for 41st at even-par.
It’s still early but that’s a huge sequence and swing for the top two players in the world.
