PGA Championship leaderboard: Jason Day is on fire, extends lead with birdie streak

Jason Day is off to a great start and has dipped into rare major championship territory.

Michael Madrid-USA TODAY Sports

Jason Day opened Sunday at the 2015 PGA Championship with the lead and if his play early on is any indication, he doesn’t plan on relinquishing the lead anytime soon. Day his now 19-under for the tournament and has a three-stroke lead.

The scores have once again gone low at Whistling Straits and Day is among the players racking up red numbers. He birdied four of his first seven holes to stay in the lead. His full game is working well, he’s once again bombing drives off the tee and his approach shots into the greens have been solid as well. The key on Sunday has been a hot putter that’s allowed him to take advantage of his opportunities. That included at No. 7, where he rolled in a 50-foot putt. It’s all going well right now for Day.

Not only does Day currently have a three-shot lead, but at 19-under, he’s in rare territory for a major championship. He’s only the fourth player to ever hit 19-under in a major championship, joining Tiger Woods at the 2000 British Open, Woods again in the 2006 PGA Championship and Jordan Spieth at the Masters this year.

Although he leads, Day will need to keep making birdies to stay on top. Branden Grace is also 4-under on his round and 16-under while Spieth is four off the lead at 15-under. Here is a look at the current leaderboard. For a live leaderboard, head over to PGA.com.
