Jordan Spieth plays ‘incredible’ Whistling Straits as rumors swirl about Rory McIlroy’s return

As rumors pop up about whether Rory McIlroy will play a practice round at Whistling Straits, Jordan Spieth gets his work done for next week’s PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy may or may not be planning a practice round at Whistling Straits on Saturday in preparation for a surprise return to action at next week’s PGA Championship, but the guy who has his eye on the No. 1 ranking currently held by the four-time major champ is getting to know the Wisconsin track well.

That guy would be Jordan Spieth, the owner of two major titles. As he learns the ins and outs of the links-style course that will host the men’s final major of the season and horns in on competitors’ photo ops, Spieth knows he would claim the top spot with a win at this week’s Rory-less WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

Spieth, who got in some practice with Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker on Monday at Firestone, obviously enjoyed his time over the weekend at Whistling Straits, which he called “incredible.”

McIlroy, for his part, has been at the center of rumors swirling about his upcoming itinerary. Golf Central Daily reported that the Whistling Straits pro shop was the source of a leak that Rory, who last month suffered a total rupture of his left ankle ligament during a soccer kickabout, had a weekend tee time.

The publicist for the 11-time PGA Tour winner, however, told Brian Keogh that his client was not on the tee sheet.

“Not booked for such a round. Still going through the ankle rehab process,” Terry Prone told Keogh.
