Bill Murray makes the Caddie Hall of Fame for ‘Caddyshack’

Little did Bill Murray know that his portrayal of the maniacal Carl Spackler in Caddyshack would earn him a spot in the Caddie Hall of Fame.

Bill Murray’s turn as Carl Spackler in the golf classic Caddyshack will be immortalized when the Academy Award-winning actor and his five brothers are inducted into the Caddie Hall of Fame on Wednesday night.

The ceremony was scheduled to take place during a private dinner following the BMW Championship Pro-Am. The Illinois natives were all slated to play in the event at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest on the eve of the third of four FedEx Cup playoff games.

Murray’s portrayal of the gopher-hating Bushwood Country Club greens keeper in the 1980 cult comedy was based on the looping experiences of Bill, Andy, Brian, Ed, Joel, and John at Indian Hill Club in nearby Winnetka, where the Murray brothers grew up.

Were it not for his acting chops, Murray, a regular at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, might make it into the Caddie Hall on the boldness of his John Daly-inspired links attire.

In addition to Bill’s memorable role, Brian Doyle-Murray co-wrote the script and played caddie master Lou Loomis in the movie. Brother John appeared in Caddyshack as well, while Ed Murray regularly teed it up with Michael O’Keefe (Noonan!) during filming.

The 16-year-old Caddie HoF recognizes individuals who have used their caddie backgrounds to gain future success and help better the lives of others. Previous inductees include Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Tiger Woods’ and Adam Scott’s ex-caddie Steve Williams, and Francis Ouimet.
