John Daly may have been knockin’ on heaven’s door for several minutes when he collapsed on a golf course in Mississippi last weekend. But Big John says it’s all good because his habit of smoking just two packs of cigarettes a day instead of three staved off the grim reaper.
John Daly’s ‘all right’ because he just smokes 2 packs of cigarettes a day, not 3
John Daly says his chain-smoking two packs of cigarettes a day rather than three saved him during a recent health scare in which he lost his pulse for almost three minutes.

“They thought I had a heart attack,” Daly said on SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio on Tuesday about the doctors who treated him at Baptist Medical Center after a health scare left him without a pulse or a breath for three minutes on Saturday at Canton’s Deerfield Country Club. “But I only smoke two packs of cigarettes a day, not three, so I’ll be all right.”
Turned out it was just your garden variety collapsed lung that felled the two-time major champion during a friendly tournament. And though he required CPR from a nurse who happened to be among the spectators, Daly was back on the course the next day to complete the competition.
On Tuesday night, Daly was on stage in Myrtle Beach at the World Amateur Handicap Championship performing, appropriately, his signature cover of Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.”
