Masters purse 2016: Danny Willett takes home $1.8 million in prize money

The 2016 Masters turned into a thrilling and very unexpected finish as Jordan Spieth collapsed in dramatic fashion, bringing a host of contenders into a frantic chase for the green jacket. That wasn’t the only major prize the field was playing for as the winners share of $1.8 million was also up for grabs. Danny Willett proved to be the big beneficiary of Spieth’s stumble, surging ahead to claim the green jacket and the winning share that went with it.

For Willett the victory is career changing. Heralded as one of the up-and-coming players in England, Willett is now a major champion. The victory is his first in the United States and the $1.8 million payout is nearly three times the $677,265 he’d previously earned playing in America. Willett has had much more success on the European Tour, with nearly $12 million in career earnings. Even with a successful career, the prize at Augusta is by far the biggest of his career. The winning share from the Masters is actually more than Willett has made in all but one season since he turned pro in 2008.

This is the second straight year the Masters winner has walked away with $1.8 million. Just two years ago, the winning prize was $1.44 million. The payout increased $1 million in 2014 before jumping another $1 million in 2015 to rise to the current $10 million payout. That makes it tied for the richest purse in golf, giving players a prestigious victory on their resume and a life-changing purse along with it.

After holding a five-stroke lead late in the tournament, there likely isn’t much consolation for Spieth. He will, however, still come away with a very significant payday. By finishing tied for second Spieth will take home, $880,000. It’s another lucrative week for Spieth, but hardly the one he had to envision as he made the turn for his final nine.

In all, 22 players came away with at least $100,000 with the top six finishers all topping $400,000. Here is a complete look at the payout.
