Ernie Els puts on another ugly putting display at the Masters 1st hole

The Big Easy was three strokes better on the first hole Friday than he was Thursday. But that doesn’t mean it was pretty

This is the rare instance where a double bogey six is an improvement. Poor Ernie Els came to the first hole at Augusta National early Friday morning under the intense microscope, with everyone watching to see if he’d be haunted by the horror show six-putt quintuple bogey that went down on Thursday.

Well, he didn’t six-putt from six feet, but he still missed a bunny putt for bogey. He badly yanked his approach shot miles left of the green and then hit a poor wedge shot to 50 feet, where presumably the real adventure would begin.

Els’ lag putt from 50 feet was actually pretty good! But the problem, which he opened up about on Thursday night, is taking the putter back on these short ones. He missed from three feet but did make the 11-inch one for double bogey.

The problems were not just at No. 1 on Thursday either, he missed a short putt at No. 2, 16, 18 and throughout the round as he narrated to the press. A late Thursday night session with his coach and caddie as darkness fell looked heart wrenching on the postgame show and doesn’t appear to have worked much for the four-time major winning South African.

The unfortunate part for Els is that he’s also playing with Jason Day on the Masters featured group stream, so his every shot will be shown in the second round.
