Masters cut line 2016: Phil Mickelson flirting with an early exit from Augusta National

Update: Mickelson ran into major issues on his final few holes and missed the cut for the third time at Augusta. Here is the full list players who missed the cut.

With heavy wind, scoring conditions have been brutal during the second round of the Masters. As a result, the projected cut line has been on the rise all day. It was once settled at 3-over, then 4-over, and now appears to be up at 5-over. That puts a couple big names on the wrong side, while others, including Phil Mickelson, need to finish well to avoid an early exit.

The top 50 players including ties will make the cut, as will any player within 10 shots of the lead. There are currently 55 players at 5-over or better and Jordan Spieth holds the lead at 6-under. That takes the 10-shot rule out of play for now. If that holds, Bubba Watson at 6-over would just be on the wrong side of the cut. Rickie Fowler at 10-over is also headed home much earlier than he likely hoped. Tom Watson finished the second round at 8-over and missed the cut in his final Masters.

Phil Mickelson finished second in the event last year, but hasn’t been able to recapture that same magic thus far. He’s 4-over on the round through 12 holes a day after shooting even par. At 4-over for the tournament, Mickelson is currently safe for the weekend, but he still has holes to play and a slip-up coming in could put him on the wrong side of the cut line. Mickelson is making his 24th start at the Masters and has only missed the cut twice.

Here is a snapshot of where things stand as the second round winds down.
