Jeff Knox buries a long birdie putt and struts for the Masters crowd

The legend grows with another huge putt in front of Bubba Watson.

Jack Gruber-USA TODAY Sports

Saturday mornings at Augusta are mainly about waiting around for the final groups to tee off, and following cult legend Jeff Knox. He’s the non-competing marker whose score does not count. The green jackets call him in when there’s an odd-numbered field after the cut, so the solo guy in the first tee time of the day has someone to play with in the morning.

Knox, however, is not just some dude off the streets. He’s an Augusta member who holds the course record from the member tees (a 61). He’s also used these non-competing marker rounds to take some money off some of the best players in the world, including Rory McIlroy (more background on his conquests here).

Knox was at it again on this Saturday morning, playing with Bubba Watson, who almost certainly wanted to play by himself (you do not have an option to decline the marker). Knox was hanging with Bubba through the front nine, even though his drives were 50 yards behind him. That run ended with a water ball that he picked up at No. 12, but he rebounded with this saucy birdie bomb at the par-5 13th. And then he strutted for the crowd.

Many pros who know him and have played with him say Knox knows the Augusta greens better than anyone on the planet and that was on display here at the trickier 13th putting surface.
