Just like a year ago, Jordan Spieth will open the final round of the Masters in the lead. He hasn’t gone as low as he did in 2015, but Spieth has once again held the wire-to-wire lead. If he closes it out on Sunday, the 22-year-old would claim his second green jacket in just his third Masters appearance. As the leader, Spieth is headed for another final pairing in a major championship.
Masters final round tee times and pairings: Jordan Spieth set for another final pairing
Despite being just 22, Spieth is already a final pairing veteran. With two major championships on his resume, this is a place he’s been before. You can’t say the same for his playing partner Smylie Kaufman. Kaufman is playing the weekend of a major for the first time in his career. This is also his masters debut. The 24-year-old is in his first full season on the PGA Tour after earning his card on the Web.com Tour last year. He surged into second place behind Spieth with a 3-under round of 69 on Saturday. It was the only round in the 60s on Saturday and the first since Thursday.
There are a few good stories and notable names among the final groups, but all eyes will once again be on Spieth. No player has ever won the same major in back-to-back years with consecutive wire-to-wire finishes, according to Justin Ray of Golf Channel. Spieth could accomplish that on Sunday and add a third major championship to his resume. All before his 23rd birthday.
If Spieth is going to make history, he might need to play better than he did on Saturday. While he held onto the lead, it was an absolute grind. Spieth also stumbled significantly coming in. He bogeyed No. 17 and finished with a double bogey on No. 18. He still owns the lead, but it could have been much more. Scoring conditions are expected to be better on Sunday with less wind, which should help the field and could create plenty of drama over the final 18 at Augusta National.
Spieth won’t be the only player with a green jacket playing in the last few groups. Two-time Masters champion Bernhard Langer is in the second-to-last pairing just two shots off the lead at 1-under. He’ll play with Hideki Matsuyama while Jason Day and Dustin Johnson will be paired at even par.
