Jordan Spieth fumes, throws club after wedge shot ends up in bunker

Jordan Spieth appeared to stick a terrific wedge shot in tight to the pin on the par-4 17th but this is Oakmont on the first day of the US Open and, well, the defending champion was not amused with the outcome.

“Are you kidding me!” the two-time major winner fumed after watching his golf ball hit above the cup and spin all the way off the green. “How is that in the bunker?! That’s such crap!”

And then the John McEnroe sound-alike tossed his club in anger, which likely would have broken the internet if Tiger Woods had done the same.

Spieth, who was even-par when the horn blew signifying a second rain delay in Thursday’s opening round, was probably already in a snit over the frustrating conditions at Oakmont that everyone predicted would drive players to distraction. It seems he and playing partners Zach Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau had been warned about their somewhat less-than-expeditious play.

As play was set to resume again, the formerly top-ranked Spieth, not exactly known for speed golf, was five shots back of early leader Andrew Landry, No. 624 in the world.
