U.S. Open leaderboard 2016: Andrew Landry leads, Bubba Watson lurks as play is delayed again

For the third time on Thursday, the opening round of the 2016 U.S. Open is in a weather delay. Rain and lighting have caused major issues, with the field struggling to get holes in. The second delay paused play for nearly four hours while the third delay might put an end to play for the day. Andrew Landry currently sits on top of the leaderboard at 3-under.

With weather issues cropping up early and continuing for most of the day, the field wasn’t able to get in much golf. Only nine players of the 156-player field actually completed their rounds. Half the field is yet to even tee off as the morning wave never made it to their first tee.

Early on, conditions were ripe for scoring, or as ripe as they will likely be at Oakmont. Many players took advantage with a few red numbers popping up. The course became more difficult as the day went on, especially after the second rain delay. Landry dropped a couple of shots after the second delay and is 3-under with only a putt on his final hole to go.

Bubba Watson has notched five birdies on the day and sits tied for second place at 2-under through 14 holes. Danny Lee is tied with Watson.

Amateur Scottie Scheffler is currently the leader in the clubhouse. He was in one of the few groups to finish the round and posted a 1-under round of 69. He’s one of seven players currently under par. Defending champion Jordan Spieth is currently tied for 16th place at 1-over. He managed to get through 11 holes, with a bogey on his 10th hole dropping him from even par.

Due to the weather forecast, it appears likely that play is done for the day. Conditions are expected to clear up the rest of the week, but there will be a lot of golf to play if the round is done for the day. Here is a current look at where things stand in the third rain delay.
