U.S. Open 2016 scores and results: Andrew Landry leads as weather halts the 1st round early

John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

The first day of the 2016 U.S. Open is officially in the books, although the day ended much earlier than expected due to heavy rain and lightning. Play was delayed three times during the round before eventually being suspended. The field spent nearly as much time waiting in delay as it did on the course.

Only nine players finished their rounds while 78 did not even tee it up on Thursday. That leaves a lot of golf to be played over the next three days. Andrew Landry is currently sitting atop the leaderboard at 3-under. He managed to complete 17 holes and only needs to putt out on his final hole to finish his first round. He has a birdie putt on his final hole and could post a round of 66. He’s one of seven players under par when the suspension hit. Bubba Watson is 2-under and tied for second place with Danny Lee.

The morning wave benefited by getting some or all of their rounds in, but also had to deal with mixed playing conditions. Early in the day, the course was playing as easy as it will likely play all week and many in the field took advantage. Landry moved to 5-under at one point and was charging. Then the second delay hit and the conditions changed dramatically. When play resumed, the field had a much tougher test and the scoring dropped.

The weather forecast calls for clear skies and warm weather the next three days. That should allow the field its best chance to catch up on the lost golf. But, it will also make for grueling long days. Not only will players have to contend with arguably the hardest course in the world, they will have to do so while playing marathon days, possibly all the way through Sunday or even into Monday.

Jordan Spieth hovered around even par all day and sits at 1-over through 11. Rory McIlroy had a tougher go of it, recording five bogeys and one birdie. He is 4-over through 13 holes and tied for 38th place. McIlroy played in one of the featured groups along with Rickie Fowler, and Fowler struggled even more. He is 6-over on his round and currently nine shots off the lead.

For some other big names, like Jason Day, Thursday was just a day of waiting. Day, like Phil Mickelson, Justin Rose, Adam Scott and many others, wasn’t able to begin his round. The challenge will be trying to make up more than half a day of golf over the course of the next three days.

Here is a look at where things stand after the first round and heading into Friday.
