U.S. Open 2016 live stream: How to watch Friday’s round online

It’s the second day (but not quite the second round yet) of the 116th U.S. Open.

They’re going to play a lot of golf at the U.S. Open on Friday, and you’ll be able to watch virtually all of it free online. The 116th version of American golf’s national championship resumes for a second day of competition after rain cut off opening-round competition not even halfway to its planned conclusion on Thursday, and now the USGA is in catch-up mode.

By pure necessity, it’s clear that golf will be played just about as long as the sun is in the sky above Oakmont Country Club, just outside Pittsburgh. Rain delayed Thursday’s rounds twice before a third bout with weather ultimately got everything pushed to Friday, so there’ll be little time for players, groundskeepers and executives to waste.

Andrew Landry, the world’s No. 624 golfer and a heretofore mostly anonymous product of Port Neches-Groves, TX, is the tournament leader at 3-under through 17 holes. The University of Arkansas product turned pro in 2009, but he’s missed cuts in six of his 11 tournaments in this, his rookie season on the PGA Tour. Yet here is Landry, ahead of the rest of a 156-player field that’s still mostly just getting started. There’s a lot of golf left to be played, but Landry’s had a great start.

Some of the world’s best players aren’t far behind Landry, and some are exactly three strokes behind him because they haven’t yet teed off. Jason Day, Adam Scott, Phil Mickelson, Louis Oosthuizen, Henrik Stenson, Branden Grace, Justin Rose and Justin Thomas are just a sampling of those who haven’t hit a shot yet in the tournament. Here’s a leaderboard, with Bubba Watson and Danny Lee just a shot back off the leader, Landry.

When rounds weren’t under delay, Oakmont played a little easier on Thursday than it did on a more seasonable first-round Thursday on the U.S. Open’s last visit in 2007. Only two players carded scores below par that day, but there are already seven in the red through abbreviated first-round action this year. Given that half the field has yet to tee off, it seems likely we’ll see a lot of red numbers as long as Oakmont is drenched and golf balls aren’t running too far from home.
