U.S. Open 2016 tee times: Pairings and start time for Sunday at Oakmont

Here’s how the field tees off on Sunday.

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

OAKMONT, Pa. – Saturday was the second-straight sunrise-to-sunset day of golf at Oakmont Country Club, where rain washed out U.S. Open first-round play on Thursday. That forced the USGA to fit in part of that round on Friday and part of the second round on Saturday, and so it will be that the national championship’s third round will have to end on Sunday morning before its final round can begin – and before final-round groupings can be announced.

A total of 67 players made the cut, and 25 needed to finish out the third round on Sunday morning. The plan had been for the final round to begin at 11 a.m. ET -- standard for a final round of a major championship -- with the field going off in groups of two, finally. But that’s been bumped to 10 a.m., with all groups going off the first tee.

Shane Lowry will open the final round with a lead at 7-under, four strokes ahead of the field. He’s ahead of Andrew Landry and Dustin Johnson at 3-under each, with Lee Westwood and Daniel Summerhays both at 2-under. Branden Grace, at 1-under, is the only other player in the field shooting below par.

A final pairing of Lowry and Landry will be an interesting group. While Lowry has won on Tour before, he’s hardly one of the biggest names in the sport. Landry, meanwhile, is playing in the first major championship of his career. Lee Westwood and Dustin Johnson are the second-to-last group, featuring two stars who haven’t closed the deal in a major. A third player in that category, Sergio Garcia, tees off with Scott Piercy two groups before Westwood and Johnson.

No. 1 in the world Jason Day is eight shots off the lead at 1-over. He carded a 4-under round of 66 in the third round and had the benefit of not needing to play early on Saturday morning. He will also be among the final few pairings and if he plays anything like he did on Saturday, he could post the score to beat and put a lot of pressure on the final few groups coming in.
