Sergio Garcia’s errant drive gets punished by the worst lie in a bunker imaginable

Sergio gets dealt a virtually impossible hand in the US Open’s final round.

Sergio Garcia’s driver shot off the 15th tee at Oakmont in the US Open’s final round went wide of the fairway to the left. Unfortunately for Garcia, Oakmont’s got an odd bunker there, with parallel mounds of grass interspersed throughout the sand that make it almost impossible to play a second shot toward the par-4 hole’s green.

But it’s hard to imagine any lie in the history of golf being worse than this one for Garcia:

FOX’s broadcast, for some reason, didn’t show it. But Garcia ultimately made bogey at No. 15.

Garcia teed off No. 15 at 2-under for the tournament, three shots (or maybe just two?) back of leader Dustin Johnson. Being stuck in a spot that bad probably snuffs out any chance Garcia had at making a comeback to the top spot on the leaderboard, though, and it’ll leave a sour taste in Garcia’s mouth.

Garcia has had a strong overall tournament, and he’s in red figures for his Sunday final round. It’s disappointing that a lie like that had to hit him at a time like this.
